Call Moser at 260-726-6689; Tell them you want a stock axle set for an SVO.
I've ordered two from them and never used a part number. If you must use a part number, the receipt I have from them lists Item ID as A2721. You'll need to ask for the wheel studs if you want them as they do not come with the studs.
If you need a set of axles, I have 2 used sets that would require a bearing saver as the stock bearing surface is shot...but never been used with a bearing saver.

I was trying not to use bearing savers. I have some noise back there but am not sure how bad things are yet. Are the SVO axles 28 or 31 spline?

If you order from Moser, get them with the studs installed.

I called Moser, they do not have them but will make a pair for $315 plus freight. I also called Yukon, they do not have a listing but they do have a listing for a 1984 Lincoln MK VII, non ABS, which is what the SVO uses. 28 spline, c clip, 30.5" long 7.5 or 8.8 rear. They quoted me $392.00 with bearings and shipping included. I am going to check back with Moser today and see how much freight is and order one set or another.

I have a spare SVO rear end and attempted to take the axles out of it and possibly use one or both of them but I ran into a problem abd the little bolt that holds the big pin in the center section rounded off and won't come out. So I might have good axles but don't know how to get them out. Anybody have any ideas or tricks on how to get that damn bolt out of there?

Buy a socket set for rounded out bolts. Sears, Snap-on, Mac, Eastwood, & many other places sell them.
Also check with www.northracecars.com for the axles. They sell Yukon but normally get special pricing. Randy's Ring & Pinion may also have a better deal.

When I called Yukon the person in Customer Service said she did not have a application for the SVO but transferred me to parts. She said they might be able to help. When I was transferred to parts I was actually talking to someone at Randy's, so there must be a connection with the factory and Randy's.

I've purchased two sets of Moser axles and both have worked out great. One set was installed on my daily driver SVO.

Besides being damaged or to upgrade, why would axles need replacing?

The reason I ask is because I'm starting to notice rear end noise. Additionally, the shop that replaced the pinion seal showed me that there's metal in the gear oil that drained out of the rear end. He mentioned that it may be time to replace bearings. Should I consider replacing the axles while the axle bearings are replaced even though there's no signs of damage to the axles?

The outer bearing is a roller bearing pressed into the axle housing while the inner race is the axle itself. So as the bearing wears, it damages the axle.

Some axle designs use a ball bearing pressed onto the shaft then bolted to the housing. Those don;t need c-clips to retain the axles in the housings. Unfortunately those aren't what Ford uses.

There are some aftermarket kits that allow the ball bearings to be used on the 8.8 axles and housings, but, last time I checked, they are NOT recommended for street or road racing applications - drag racing only.

On a kind of related note: I have a used SVO axle that has a good bearing surface but the wheel flange is bent and it wobbles. The axle shaft itself runs true but the flange only is bent. Is it possible to straighten the flange somehow?

Don't even attempt it. If you could actually find someone to try it (which I doubt) it would probably cost as must or more as the cost of a new one to get it perfectly straight (if that's even possible). And then, what would you have? An expensive used axle that was bent and "rebent" back. I doubt you would want that on your car. Be safe. If budget is an issue, take the time to find a good (straight) used one.

Though this thread is 4 months old, perhaps someone maybe be shopping around for a new set soon. Called Moser today to get a quote for a set of SVO stock axle set. They sell them for $260.00 + shipping and add another $17.50 if you want the studs. They do not have a part number for this item and are custom made.

This is a listing of the common axle sizes you may find in a salvage. This is handy if you are replacing an axle or doing a conversion. It's accurate as far as I know, but it never hurts to double check. Remember the axles are the same between the 7.5" and the 8.8" and can be interchanged. Look for the 8.8 differential starting in 86. If you have more sizes that you have found helpful, email them to me.

I will also add that axles can take a set, that is they will have a twist to them after being run in a vehicle. It would be good practice to use an axle on the same side of the car as it came from.
