View Full Version : SN95 Throttle Body upgrade

Not sure if this is the right area, but here is a nice write up I did a while back for a budget throttle body upgrade. This helped my drive ability quite a bit after the intake,and cam upgrade. At the same time I upgraded to the SN95 style sensors and the car surprisingly ran quite a bit better. All idle surge and the mystery miss was gone after this swap which made me a happy panda. Disclaimer - I had a spare intake hanging out for this setup, all my SVO stuff is unmolested sitting in boxes in the attic.

The first thing I did was go to the local pick yard.
Parts list is as follows:

60mm throttle body from SN95 or supercoupe(with sensors if possible) note - if using the TPS from SN95 you need to delete the EGR, if not using TPS from SN95 disregard those items.
Proper pigtail for the sn95 tps.
TPS off an older 2.3(for its wiring).
Throttle cable bracket off 2.3 car.
If your using the SN95 tbody you might want to grab a junk 2.3 tbody to steal linkage off of.

Transition hose for intercooler to tbody should be 2 1/2 inches long with 2 1/2 inch inner diamater to 3 3/16 inner diameter(Have to source this elsewhere.)

I soldered and shrink wrapped the wiring for the TPS and rewrapped it for the factory look.
After that was done I went ahead and made a diagram of the bolt hole locations from the stock Tbody. Then drilled them out on the sn95 throttle body and filled the gaps on the back with epoxy since one of the holes ends up into the gap, I was paranoid about possible vacuum leaks. I also took this time to cut the opening in the upper to match the intake with a die grinder and trimmed my gaskets.
Next modify the spare bracket, I cut it and attached it to the stock bracket staggered one bolt back, this will give the linkage the proper distance.
I went ahead and smoothed out the top of the throttle body to look like the 2.3 throttle body by removing the tower, I went a little overboard and mildly polished it though. If using a SN95 tbody go ahead and adapt the linkage.
I had already gutted and ported my intake, while there I cut off the EGR flange and welded it all up which is necessary for the SN95 TPS clearance.
After said and done it bolted up and everything plugged in as if it came from the factory that way. I did all this for around $45 with parts from a local salvage yard, the most expensive piece being the transition hose that I had to pick up from the store.

That's really good. For the hose, there is a Napa hose you may be able to use. I can get the number later.

The throttlebody can be had off of a Supercoupe preferably since no linkage modification is necessary. If you cannot find a supercoupe throttlebody the 94-95 GT Mustangs have the same throttlebody with different linkage, so some extra work is necessary.

No 4 banger available in SN95 (94+) Mustangs. These come off the 5.0 Mustangs and supercharged V6 Thunderbird engines of that era.

One question I have had on this but keep forgetting to ask, does it really show any increase in performance if the intake itself isn't opened up? I have a 70mm TB sitting in a box someone gave me because I didn't think I'd see any improvement on a stock intake.

I opened up the intake, it is mentioned it in the instructions above. I noticed almost a night and day difference in drive ability and idle quality was much better after the swap. So even if there was minimal HP gains(no back to back dyno to confirm or deny any gains), to me the gain in how it drove was more than enough.

My guess is you would want to at least match the port on the upper intake & at a minimum gasket match the lowers. If not you'll still be restricted by the smaller size runners. No need to gut the intake & avoid knife edging, just match the openings & you'll be fine.

I'd bet you'd actually see a power loss with the larger throttle body and no porting to open up the intake to match. The large ledge that would be present would flow worse than the smaller throttle body (which isn't an airflow restriction until you exceed about 350hp btw).

I run a stock TB on my 300rwhp track car. It is not necessary to change, however everyone's tastes are different. 86svo9l like the changes and you might also. However, you must match the intake manifold to the larger TB or you will see no benefit.
