Tim, coil on plug has been fairly standard on production vehicles for the last 10 years. Can you be a bit more specific with the intent of your question?

I think guys are using 'coil packs' from ls series engines when mated with Megasquirt setups. Dont know of anyone using COP setups

I have three cars with engines that use COP ignition. All of them are DOHC with a centralized spark plug and the COP assy is mounted to the cam cover with the long boot extensions to the plug way down inside an access hole.

To implement that on the 2.3L OHC would require a safe way to mount the COP unit above the plug and with the stock angle that puts it right over the hottest portion of the exhaust manifold. That would be very bad for longevity. Shouldn't be too difficult to create mounts to hold the upper portion of the COP and bolt it into place - either weld brackets to the cam cover or make something that mounts over the exhaust side cam cover-to-head mounting bolts.

Probably more better would be mounting the COP units above the cam cover (providing there's enough clearance with TB, tubing, hood, etc.) then run spark plug cables between the COP outputs and the plug itself. Kinds like what the dual-coil waste-spark coils do.

The cop setups are popular with the MS crowd and many are using the Cobra cops. The truck LS coils just pack such an impressive spark though and the wire sets are short. Plus they allow you to move the coils away from the hot exhaust.

I have it on my wife's 2.3 Ford street car. It also is an Atkinson cycle engine.They call it a Ford Escape Hybrid.

Lsx coils, driven by a Haltech (LSx coils are self-ignitors). EDIS 36-1 wheel, CAMP hall effect sensor from a Ford diesel truck (thanks Pat!). We use stock LSx plug wires and a TR6 plug, which is a colder LS plug. The grey wiring is to the injectors, not additonal spark plug wires.

Thank you for the fast response. I'll have to research and digest your product info. Sorry for mistaking your injector wires for plugs wires---Lame on my part, but just going from the visual of my last turbo 4 which had 2 injectors per cylinder and a much smaller gauge of wire.

Just a further bit on my quest for coil on plug- I need to eliminate the stock Ford distributor so that I can run
a tubed intake. The vehicle is an 84 SVO that I am reconfiguring to a more street able setup and have never assembled the pieces for a custom EFI. Years ago I purchased a complete 2.5 race system which only required
installation. After that I ran a 358" dry sump with carb so this will be a new experience.

Good luck. I'm very pleased with the system. Its worked for us quite well. We've even adapted LSx coils to our '54 Chrysler Hemi Engine Masters engine. They are quite adaptable.

Pyropete on TF is using COP on his 'squirted 2.3 Merkur. He sells what he makes as well. Can't vouch for the quality though. Check Ebay for the parts.
