I have the Essy round tooth kit timing kit with the Star adjustable cam pulley. the Essy instructions say to omit the cam pulley back up plate. Has anyone had an issue with this? What about the backup plate on the crank sprocket? Should you keep this with the Essy application? It figures I found a Ranger setup in the JY for $40 the day after I bought the Essy kit.

I have the same Essy adj cam sprocket and ALWAYS run both a front and rear belt guide.

Note that some of the sprockets had a hump on the rear side - this can replace the rear belt guide. But if there is no hump, there is nothing to keep the belt from running off the back of the sprocket into the head.

I have pics somewhere.

I have the same set up and run both plates as well. When i frist installed it i left the upper plate off and while turning the engine over by hand it looked like the belt was walking off the cam gear toward the V/C so i took it apart and installed the rear plate on the cam gear.Make sure the bolts are tight on the adjustable cam gear before you start it ! And as per esslinger the 12 point bolts are torqued to 10 foot pounds.

Mike, great pics. One other thing I noticed is when I put the Essy aux sprocket on the shaft, it left a 1/4" void between the end of the aux shaft and the flush face of the sprocket. I do not recall if this is correct with the factory gear, however the Essy aux sprocket is fully seated against the aux shaft shoulder and there is no play. The bolt will engage with plenty of threads captured into the aux shaft, but this just looks wrong!

Aux shaft sprocket looks fine. make sure there's at least 6 full turns of the bolt. Then tighten it to 30 Ft-Lbs. Good to go.
