Anyone here ever use a small journal block and crank to build a turbo motor before?

The issue I'm having is that the thrust bearing is only 180 degrees versus the 360 in the older large journal design. Is this an issue? OR did my mains kit kit get put together wrong by Clevite? The thrust surface shell goes in the block side and a regular bearing shell into the No. 3 main cap. The shell locator notch/tab in the No. 3 main cap is offset to the side whereas the locator notch/tab is in the middle on the block castings There is always a thrust surface of the crank in contact with the180 degree bearing.

I would contact the place that sold you the bearings and complain. That just doesn't look right.

Me also thinks that you should have a thrust bearing shell on the lower. The cap is machined for it. I suspect the difference in the tab locations is related to grooved versus solid shell.

I will review my pics of small bearing shell parts when I get home. If I remember.

Pat, it was RA, but I mosey'ed over to TF and found out that the small journal motors only have a 180 degree thrust bearing. Weird, eh?

I'd suggest that you get one ore thrust (center) bearing shell and run in in the center lower as long as it will properly fit hte center cap and align properly with the upper shell.

Here's some pics from a 2.3L turbo block that I disassembled for inspection that with a [lightened] 2.5 crank in it (and uses bearing spacer shells). It works fine with both upper and lower center thrust shells.

Looks like you've got the bearing question answered. It looks to me like that crank is looking like it's got surface rust on it? If so, I'd suggest cleaning that up before assembly (or before it touches the bearings but it looks like it's too late for that).

That was an NOS crank from Ford...still in the box. The "rust" is Cosmoline or some other substance applied to the journals to prevent rust. It wasn't bolted in, just set into the mains and as quickly removed. Certaintly not spun if that is what you were suggesting. The picture is a bit misleading.

Mike, I dunno know if I can get a thrust shell with the alignment tab in the center in the small journal size. I will follow up tho. As Pat indicated. Highly suspect. These are Clevite bearings too. Not Joe's Crap Shack brand XXX.
