vSituation update: The SVO is in storage in Phoenix, AZ while I figure out my next steps. It sounds to some other folks that I may have stuck the piston rings due to the overtemp. So, I guess I'll be...
I am moving my household to another city so I am loading all of the SVO related items from the garage to the SVO. Everything neat and clean in tidy boxes and it is time to close up the car, down the...
I've read somewhere to replace the head bolts when installing a new head gasket. Does ARP offer a set? Or what dimensions will I need to order? Or should I just forget it (wive's tales).
BTW, I am also running a BoPort 1.9 roller cam. Perhaps that can affect the compression if the belt is off a tooth or two?
Throttle was NOT blocked full open; I can redo.
I'll pull the timing belt cover and check the cam timing!
Car still in Phoenix.
Motor has 69,000 miles on the clock, all of them under my command, and the initial overheating issue caught me completely by surprise when it occurred. Hmmm.
OK, so assuming that the head gasket is the only issue, what gasket set do I need to get this puppy back on its feet again?
Sorry for the radio silence. Yesterday I did a compression check and did #1 @ 90#, 2 @ 80#, 3 @ 30# and #4 @ 30#.
Maybe I am finding the issue...hmmm.
Duh, had not thought about that. I'm thinking maybe the cam skipped a tooth or something. Harder than heck to get started (crank, crank, crank) like there is no fuel pressure (I check that also...
Update. Now holds water, holds oil. I let it idle in the driveway for about 30 minutes while the excess oil burned off of the exhaust and catalytic converter. When warm, it does not like to idle....
OK, the water pump is replaced, as is the gasket for the thermostat housing. When I added water, there was a leak from the lower radiator hose connection at the water pump. It has the original double...
While driving back to Phoenix from Oro Valley, AZ, via Florence, I entered US 60 Westbound at Apache Junction. Then transitioned to the 202 West and immediately noticed my temp gauge was pegged on...
Drove back to Oro Valley from Phoenix last night via Florence, AZ. The AC was so cold I had to turn it down and eventually off as I approached Oro Valley. During the span from Apache Junction, AZ to...
Bingo. I completely rebuilt the AC system again on Monday morning including complete flush of all "flushable" components, then evacuate for an hour drawing 22 inches of mercury, then a can of R-134a....
I'd recommend alignment by Jack's Alignment at 2902 E Thomas Rd, Phoenix. Been in business forever and they do not take appointments (just drive on in). Let the expert do the analysis before...
OK all of you AC guys out there. Here's the scenario. I had a squealing belt on the AC system and it appeared that the compressor had frozen up. I removed the belt and ordered a new HR-980 compressor...
Was gonna call you, but I am still just getting over covid and napping a lot.

OK, the real issue was the orifice tube being blocked. Replaced the orifice tube, vacuumed, charged and now the AC is cooling once again (and now I have a spare HR980 and accumulator). I still get...
Just measured the pulley (I have a 2-groove pulley on the AC compressor) for belt length and it appears that the Gates 7345 would work better for me. The numbers I found are as follows:
Gates 7385...
Maybe that is the problem. My AC belt is a 7355 right now. I'm experiencing a horrible screech with the AC on. I have replaced the compressor, fearing that it was seized, but now it appears to be a...
I'm the original owner of this 86 SVO and it has 68K miles on the clock. Just replaced the HR980 AC compressor and am trying to charge the system with 134a (I converted a few years back). I now have...
IMHO, I have been driving my SVO since June of 1986, when it was purchased new. The suspension is all stock (even today) and still has the original Koni's. The only drive-train od was to swap in an...
The lack of marks is probably due to the use of sticky notes instead of chalk or paint with cars in the 1980s. I worked at Chevrolet in Van Nuys, CA in 1966 and a few of the marks were placed on...
Hey kids, it has been a while since I posted but my SVO was the topic of an article and interview by Dana and Tom Schlichter, of Phoenix, AZ, who sponsor the youtube page "If this car could talk"....
I swapped in an aluminum unit from Champion last year. Bolted right in, hoses fit right up, runs wayyyy cooler now, right where it should be. Better than new, even. Car has 68,000 miles on it now. I...
