Which timing mark you looking for? The one on the crank and front cover?

Crank pulley has a notch - that you should paint white to make it easy to see. The corresponding numbers are on the front cambelt cover, with a notch for crank TDC. Advance moves up towards water pump.

Next time you're at a parts store, get a brush-type bottle of a couple colors of touch-up paint: White, red, black. Then use it to mark stuff.

If you look closely, You'll find a factory punch mark on the block for the distributor alignment/location as well.
