    79 cylinder head

What if anything would need to be done to a N/A '79 head so it could be used on our cars?
I have one that I am thinking about selling but I don't want to mislead anyone.

If I recall a N/A is quite a bit different from a turbo head (flow/port shape wise). I am no expert tho and don't know how much work it would take to run a N/A head on a turbo block/manifold/intake.

The ports are opened up to match the gaskets on both intake and exhaust and the valves are 1.59 intake and 1.86 exhaust. it also has double springs. I don't remember whos cam it is or what the lift is anymore and I lost the spec card.

It isn't the intake or exhaust ports that are the issue. It is the combustion chamber. If it is kindney shaped it can be made to work .. if it is the heart shaped ones then that is nobueno. I have a NA head on my svo now. It has the oval shaped intake ports (instead of D shaped). That is no big deal at all, mine also has the little ports under the exhaust ports which can be drilled tapped and plugged. Trying to find uncracked turbo heads now days is next to impossible. Now I search for late 70s cars in hopes of finding the right casting #s. I have a list somewhere that has most of the good casting #s but I have been looking for the last few days on several hard-drives with no luck. When i find it I will post it up.

Here is the combustion chamber. It has been worked over too.

Looks like a standard, turbo-shaped chamber. Be sure to install hardened exhaust seats at a minimum if you're planning on using this on a turbo'd engine. The standard iron seat material will not live long under high EGT of turbo engine.

I built a n/a engine around 1990 for a 79 coupe I had. The block was bored forty over with ARP rod bolts and this head was built for it. I ran a Holley 390 4 barrel carb. I wish I could remember the cam size, but I doubt it is turbo compatible. It also has double valve springs, oversize valves, ported intake and exhaust ports and I know the cumbustion chambers were worked over too.
Its been off the engine for a long time. It would need to have a set of seals put in it to be put back in use but that's it.

As Mike already confirmed.. that is a good head to use. Hardened seats is about all you would need if they havent been done already. If you dont mind can you post up the casting # just for archive sake.

Here's a link to info on head casting numbers from Boport.

    Various Head Castings - 2.3 turbo.pdf

In comparing with this chart - it appears that your head is a Type #3 head. 79-81 carb turbo head. The casting #'s are D9EE-JC - Right?

I think so. The head came off a plane jane carbed car. I know that for a fact because I helped pull the whole engine out.
