    That is great stuff!
I remember the Merkur from back in the day... I even put several hundred miles on one courtesy of Hertz.
I remember looking it over very closely - and seeing how it was built. Entirely different form US Fords of the time - little things like fasteners and design of things like the headliners. Entirely different, unlike today where Europe and North American cars, even if they are not offered in the same markets, are built using the same designs.

In the mid-nineties, I saw a Merkur at an open track weekend... with race tires. It sheared it's front spindle. It just wasn't built strong enough. One parallel there is the Mustang SVO, which used a much stronger spindle than the other Mustangs.

I owned an '89Merc for 18 yrs finally sold it this spring. Loved that car. The SVO has taken its place but thus far has been a far greater pita, I'm gettin close to finishing its current needs so we'll see. Nice story on the rebirth of the 200 miler wish him well!
