I have a few NOS aux shafts available, no distributor gears though.

Esslinger makes a good set. That's what I went with when mine died.

I have my engine out on a stand for some work. I'm about ready to reinstall. While setting up the timing I took a closer look at the bronze Esslinger distributor gear. It had a lot of wear. I have both the aux. shaft and dist. gear from Esslinger. The aux. is good. They both have about 20k on them, some of the wear could be attributed to bad timing backfiring issues. I have a spare bronze gear and several distributor ready to go

The bronze gear is the wear item and gets replaced periodically.

Out of curiosity, how often should the bronze gear get replaced?

It isn't an exact science based on miles/time. Inspect it every 5K miles and replace when it's worn. That should give you a better picture of the wear rate.
Say when it's new, it gives 0.5 degrees of spark scatter due to gear slop (backlash). Then perhaps when it wears enough to have say 3 degrees of backlash, it's time.
BTW - measuring the dizzy shaft gear backlash can get complicated to talk about.

Okay, Thanks. I can imagine measuring that would get a bit complicated.

It's not any worse than keeping notes on tyre pressures and temps after each track session over several seasons. Probably more about record keeping than anything else.
Take off the distributor cap.
Push down on the rotor and twist the rotor max from right to left (clockwise/anti-clockwise) and measure the max rotation amount. Translate to degrees.
Repeat above measurement in 2K miles.
Compare notes.
Decide when the wear is enough.
Replace parts as needed.
Esslinger may have a different test method - keep in mind they will move towards selling more parts.

Back to the OP.....I'll check. I may have a matched set distributor gear and aux shaft. They MUST be replaced as an assembly if going with used parts. If you don't, they will consume each other quickly.

I have a matched set distributor/aux shaft. PM me if you're still interested
